Life

DESCRIPTION: The seventh of nine pages on Life (one of the Field Nodes comprising the subject tree of The Telson Spur), this page is a list of links to on-line resources in the study of the origin and evolution of life (including evolutionary theory and phylogeny). The coordinate pages, with a common header and List of Contents, contain links to other resources in the life sciences (including the life sciences in general, morphology and physiology, and biology education; molecular and cell biology, development, and genetics; biodiversity, systematics and taxonomy, microbiology, and plant biology; zoology; the biology of cetaceans and of primates, and ecology), resources in the neurosciences (including neurobiology, ethology, psychology, and cognitive science), and other resources in evolutionary biology (palaeobiology; dinosaurs, palaeoneurology and ethological aspects of evolution).

KEYWORDS: biology; chemical evolution; evolution; life; phylogeny; Precambrian biology

Origin of Life

Curiously, it is perfectly all right to say that life exists elsewhere in the Universe, provided it is considered to have arisen separately in each place of its existence, even though to have arisen separately would require a repetition of the same highly improbable events as on the Earth. What must not be done is to regard life in many places as manifestations of the same cosmic process. This, it seems, offends deeply against the scientific culture.

Evolution and Phylogeny

It is indeed remarkable that this theory has progressively taken root in the minds of researchers following a series of discoveries made in different spheres of knowledge. The convergence, neither sought nor provoked, of results of studies undertaken independently from each other constitutes in itself a significant argument in favour of this theory.
