The Orphan cried out in protest, as the cold of naked space entered his bones, "Who am I?" And once more science answered. "You are a changeling. You are linked by a genetic chain to all the vertebrates. The thing that is you bears the still aching wounds of evolution in body and in brain... You were the size of a rat. You ate insects. Now you fly to the Moon."

"This is a fairy tale," protested the Orphan. "I am here, I will look in the mirror."

"Of course it is a fairy tale," said the scientists, "but so is the world and so is life. That is what makes it true. Life is indefinite departure. That is why we are all orphans. That is why you must find your own way."

Loren Eiseley (from 'The Cosmic Orphan')

'Tis long till eve and morn are gone:
Slow the endless night comes on,
And late to fulness grows the birth
That shall last as long as earth.

Wanderers eastward, wanderers west.
Know you why you cannot rest?
'Tis that every mother's son
Travails with a skeleton.

A. E. Housman

He kura tangata, e kore e rokohanga; he kura whemua ke rokohanga.
(Know this, that people shall pass; but the land will endure.)
Maori proverb

"Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away."
Revelation 21:3-4 (RSV)

While we are waiting with hope and fear of finding the superman on other planets or in other universes, we have within ourselves a new and expanding universe of our own to explore -- one that is here, for us to grasp. It is within the individual that the universe will be regained.
Gene Weltfish (The Lost Universe, 1965)
